Kishore and the overbudget song

Aap Ki Kasam (1974) starring Rajesh Khanna, Sanjeev Kumar and Mumtaz was the directorial debut of J Om Prakash and he was also the producer of the film. The music as we all know was given by RD Burman and the songs were sung by Kishore and Lata.

Jai Jai Shiv ShankarIt is said that RD had called extra musicians and chorus for the recording of Jai Jai Shiv Shankar as he wanted to create a sound to go in sync with the intended picturization of the song. This led the songs budget to shoot up from the planned 25000 rupees to 50000 rupees. When J Om Prakash reached the studio and was apprised of the budget overshoot ; obviously frowning at this development he went up to RD and conveyed that he does not the like the song much even after doubling the budget.

Shortly Kishore entered the studio and upon seeing RD in a sombre mood; when up to him to enquire on the matter. RD promptly narrated the issue to Kishore who asked him not to worry and to go ahead with the recording.
Kishore had some other mischief in his mind and while singing the song he added the following line by himself – “Bajao re bajao imaandaari se bajao , pachaas hazaar kharcha kar diye” (play with sincerity , 50000 have been spent).
This line was never removed and has been part of the song. A chart topper in Binaca Geetmala 1974; Jai Jai Shiv Shankar ranks among the all time hits!!!
